About Worcester Providence Counseling

Our Clinical Philosophy...

Worcester Providence Counseling Services is made up of two individual clinicians in private practice.  Our philosophy is that what you need out of treatment is for you to decide, not your insurance company. At WOPRO we are committed to providing you with affordable choices and we value your right to confidential behavioral health care. Clients who want to maintain privacy rights are encouraged to pay the clinician directly for services rendered ("fee for service"). Check with your insurance company about accessing "out of network" providers. Our licensed clinicians will be happy to provide you with a bill that you submit to your insurance company for re-imbursement.

If you decide to access your health insurance benefits please understand that we will be required to give you a psychiatric diagnosis and disclose other personal information to your insurance company. Although federal regulations do cover confidentiality, your managed care plan (MCP) has the right to request information from your therapist on risk factors, current stressors in your life, history of substance abuse treatment, what you are working on in therapy and the progress being made.  Furthermore, this lack of confidentiality could impact your minor children even more negatively.  Should they ever desire to apply for certain jobs, to certain colleges or educational programs, such as law enforcement or the military, information in their insurance files could be used against them.   If your concerns meet their definition of "medical necessity", your insurance company will decide whom you can see for health care and how often. They will limit your choices.

At Worcester Providence Counseling Services, we are devoted to the client and informing him/her/them of the choices at hand so they might make the best decision possible.  We understand that private pay is not an option for everyone and that a large majority of the insurance companies offering mental health care are quality organizations devoted to the best interest of those they cover.  Simply stated, we feel you should be an informed consumer of any and all care you receive.

Our Treatment Focus

Our focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan.

Our Patient Promise

We promise to be there for you every step of your journey. Our goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life.

My desire to form Worcester Providence Counseling services with my colleagues was born through the belief that effective and efficient therapy can take place without spending years on a couch. By offering a comfortable setting with ease and convenience in scheduling, 7 days a week, I help create an environment for forward movement. Whether it’s a problematic behavior, an interpersonal struggle or enhancing the “successes” the client is already experiencing, Worcester Providence Counseling can help.

By listening to my clients over the years and through constant needs assessment, new treatment interventions are regularly employed. I use the techniques of Role Play, Conflict Enactment, Creative Visualization and Relaxation as well as Audio and Videotaping and story booking to get results. Partnering with my wife, Chantal Royer-Haig, MA, LMHC, has also added the expertise of a licensed counselor & Certified Early Intervention Specialist, dedicated to working with children and families. Chantal’s expertise encompasses treating children with diagnosis’ including ADD, Autism and PDD Spectrum Disorders, and Developmental Delays. Karen Puopolo MSW, LICSW

Karen has experience working with individuals, children, couples and families.  She specializes in treating children and their families as well as working with parents around the unique struggles of raising responsible, well-adjusted kids in today’s fast-paced, stress-filled society.  In working with young children, Karen utilizes a collaborative approach with families because she believes family participation is crucial to a positive therapeutic outcome.  When working with parents, Karen focuses on maintaining balance within the family as well as nurturing the marital relationship.

Do you wish therapy stopped focusing on what was wrong and started to answer what can we do about this?  In my private practice, I take an approach that is short-term and focused on solutions and strengths.  I believe in helping clients find the skills that will work for them so that they are able to confidently transition out of therapy and positively manage their symptoms and relationships on their own.   My areas of expertise include anxiety and mood disorders in children, working with new mothers around adjusting to their new role and managing their emotions, and the challenges of parents and families especially around power struggles and stress.

More about me:

After receiving my Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in 1993, I worked at a shelter for battered women.  This experience inspired me to pursue my Masters of Social Work at the University of California Berkeley.  I completed my MSW program in 1998 and worked in community mental health until starting a private practice in 2006.  I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts and a member of the National Association of Social Workers.  Since 1999, I have been providing quality clinical services to the Blackstone Valley.  Not only do I work in the community, but my husband and I are raising our 4 sons here as well.
